Dueling Axes – Where throwing axes is business as usual

Dueling Axes – where throwing axes is just business as usual

Who hasn’t dreamed about changing your life around? That’s what Jess and Paul did: from the construction industry to throwing axes.

We probably all have experienced a feeling off… smashing things. Or breaking things. Hit someone on the head. With a chair. That kind of thing. But fortunately, most of us can keep their cool. But wouldn’t it be great to sometimes just let off some steam? That you can let that frustration out. That desire to do something crazy. Like… I don’t know… Like throwing an axe?Yes! Like throwing an axe. Isn’t it amazing that you can do that exact thing at Dueling Axes?! With single-target lanes and a razor-sharp axe you can bring out your primal self.

It all started in 2017. Jess Hellmich and his business partner Paul Sherry came across a LinkedIn article that discussed the industry of throwing axes. Having the construction industry as a professional background, where every day brought a bigger headache and complicated challenges, they could use a refreshing change of pace. Jess: ‘After a relatively short conversation and some quick napkin math, we both decided we were intrigued enough to start researching the industry to see if it was a viable option to go out on our own.’

This was before the explosive industry growth in late 2018 and 2019, so it took some balls to get out there and see if the market for throwing axes was a viable one. They took the time to come up with a good plan: ‘We spent nearly 6 months developing a detailed business plan. And eventually we found ourselves touring commercial real estate to find the right location.’

The industry is a fast growing one, but that doesn’t mean it’s automatically easy to run a business. Especially when confronted with growth, it’s important to make the right decisions and to take some risk. ‘I wouldn’t call it “struggle”, but managing our growth has taken a lot of work,’ Jess says. Considering they started in 2017 and now have three locations, with a new one in Las Vegas on the way, “a lot of work” isn’t an exaggeration. The new Las Vegas location will be nearly three times larger than the original facility, with a beer and wine bar in AREA15 just off the strip. As Jess says: ‘It’s a big swing and it has taken many, many hours of commitment, lost sleep, and determination.’

Luckily they started off with a strong team, which helped them manage all the different processes. Because you can’t do it all on your own.

How interesting it all sounds, did Jess and Paul really just start the business because they saw a LinkedIn article. Well, yes and no. The article kick-started it, but as every business knows, a good business starts with a passion. Jess: ‘Even as a young kid moving through the ranks of Boy Scouts, a well-crafted blade always fascinated me. Whenever I could, I would carry a small knife with me and I would constantly find myself using it as an indispensable, daily tool.’

Even today he carries a 3.5″ Elk Ridge, spring assisted folding straight blade. Like many knife-lovers will understand, some knives just have a special meaning. ‘It carries some sentimental significance for me as well, with a custom handle engraved to commemorate my officiating of one of my best friends’ wedding,’ he says.

Okay, a knife is not the same as an axe, but it would be a bit difficult to walk around with an axe all day, wouldn’t it? But the affinity with sharp instruments was there. And like Jess says: ‘When it comes to throwing axes, let’s face it – it’s just plain fun and incredibly satisfying.’ And he can know, because he runs a friggin’ company that’s all about throwing axes. He continues: ‘Throwing an ancient tool into a chunk of wood and getting it to stick provides a feeling of euphoria that is hard to match.’

I don’t know about you, but it makes us feel like trying it out!

See for yourself – doesn’t it look cool?!

Axe Throwing What to Expect

So what kind of axes do they use? You might have spotted in the video that everyone has the same axe. That’s because you’re not to bring your own axe (unless it is during league nights). Not really a bad thing though, because you wouldn’t want to mess up your axe. The handles take quite a beating (especially with beginners, the axe doesn’t always stick), and that’s why they also don’t use fancy, expensive axes. And for safety reasons they decided to stay away from rubber covered, metal handled axes. Jess: ‘Our everyday, house axe is a 1.25 axe on a hickory handle that is about 14″ long. We’ve standardized the axes so that it allows for a better overall coaching and throwing experience.’

Not only throwing experience, but the entire customer experience is a central concept for Dueling Axes. Jess sometimes feels that the service industry has moved too far away from paying close attention to customer service and that many companies seem to forget that the customer is the lifeblood of their business. That’s why everything they do is tailored to provide an exceptional experience that guests can’t get anywhere else in the industry. And that’s important, because nowadays you need to be able to differentiate yourself. Otherwise people just go to the competition. Jess is especially proud of the atmosphere they create: ‘It’s the ease of coming in and doing it without effort. It already starts at making the reservation. From A to Z, we have you covered and we’re committed to doing what it takes to ensure the customer has a fantastic time.’

There are two ways to throw the axe: 1 hand holding the axe & over or behind the head. Or 2 hands holding the axe & over or behind the head

With three locations and the expansion in Las Vegas, what other plans does Dueling Axes have in the future? Well, they plan to keep on expanding and evolving the brand and services they offer. They like to challenge themselves to continue being the best, stay in front of the trends and provide the best experience and customer service to their customers. ‘We see a lot of businesses bringing in additional experiences, like rage room options, into their venues and other industries like go-karts and laser-tag businesses are incorporating axe throwing,’ Jess says. ‘We’ve even seen “glow party” formats using black lights and fluorescent paint on the target boards. From our perspective, it’s unnecessary. Axe throwing by itself is really, really fun and engaging. It’s the execution of the customer experience that sets us apart from the competition and keeps our customers coming back for more.’

Jess thinks that eventually technology will also be introduced in the industry. He compares it with the evolution of bowling, that went from a simple ball and pins to flashing lanes and disco bowling, and can now be played on your smartphone. Heck, maybe one day you’ll have their app on your phone, because whatever the future will bring, Dueling Axes will be there. Driven by creating the best customer experience and especially his 2.5-year-old, Jess is motivated to make the business a success and grow it into something his daughter can be extremely proud of.

Soon after our interview, the COVID-19 pandemic forced most companies to temporally close. We’re happy to say that Dueling Axes withstood this uncertain and difficult time. Jess & Paul re-opened again beginning of June and are now fully operational again.

Dueling Axes Announces Expansion, Anniversary Tournament Series

Dueling Axes Expansion

Dueling Axes axe-throwing lounge in Downtown Columbus will celebrate its one-year anniversary on July 7. In celebration, the lounge announces an expansion into New Albany, as well as a tournament series and other promotions.

The lounge will expand to New Albany as part of the Hamilton Quarter expansion southeast of Hamilton and 161. The development is also the future site of a Target Next Generation store, Hobby Lobby, and a host of other retail businesses and restaurants.

Dueling Axes’ expansion will double the size of its Downtown location — which will allow for twice as many lanes, but with the same rustic feel. The space will also include a private meeting room and a traditional parking lot.

The lounge is looking at an opening in 2020.

“That kind of opens up a new market for us, that northeast side of Columbus,” said Jess Hellmich, co-owner of Dueling Axes. “There’s a whole group of people that only stay Downtown or inside 270. And then there’s a whole group that don’t want anything to do with Downtown.”

A part of Dueling Axes’ formal one-year anniversary celebration is a set of 32-person, bracket-style tournaments on three nights in July. For a $20 fee, individuals can compete for one of six spots in the finals. The winner will get tickets to a Columbus Clippers game, and get the chance to make the “first axe throw” ahead of the game.

“Instead of your first pitch, we’re going to set up a target and someone’s going to be able to throw an ax over home plate,” explains Hellmich.

Tickets will also be given away, as well as company merch, restaurant gift cards and gift certificates to the lounge.

The celebration also incorporates a number of promotions, including summer happy hour pricing on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays through Labor Day. On Sunday, July 7, the day of the anniversary, one-hour reservations will cost $10 a person for a minimum of four-person groups.

Hellmich and Paul Sherry, co-owner of Dueling Axes, say the past year has gone by quickly. They now have 10 people on staff, and the response from patrons has exceeded expectations.

“No injuries. Two splinters, I suppose,” said Sherry. “Most people come in, they pick it up right away.”

“Coming in on a Saturday night and seeing a bunch of coolers in here, with people just having a good time. It’s something else,” said Hellmich. “You don’t see it in a lot of places.”

“Columbus has really embraced axe throwing,” said Sherry.

More information, including registration for the tournament, can be found online at theduelingaxes.com.

The Urban Axe Throwing Interview

The small business atmosphere in Columbus, Ohio is booming! According to the Columbus Dispatch, Columbus has been known to be one of the top cities for new business growth. So, it sounds like Downtown Columbus is the perfect location for an urban axe throwing lounge, no?614 Startups Jess Hellmich Interview

Owner, Jess Hellmich was interviewed by Elio Harmon of 614 Startup Podcast about the Idea, Scale, and Impact of the urban axe throwing lounge, Dueling Axes.  On S2E5, Elio asks how the idea of bringing an axe throwing facility to Downtown Columbus came about. Co- Owners Jess Hellmich and Paul Sherry may or may not have talked about it over drinks after a poker game. They were looking to bring a different activity, that many people have not tried, to Downtown Columbus. They saw an opportunity in the axe throwing industry and decided they wanted to be the best. The process was tough, and long. But once they landed a location on South 4th Street in Downtown Columbus, in the middle of a community of other great small businesses, everything started falling into place. With help from their construction backgrounds, Jess and Paul put every screw into the space that Dueling Axes calls home. After a year and a half from start to finish, the urban axe throwing lounge opened in July 2018. Since opening, Jess and Paul have figured out what works best for them, what works best for business, and have only heard positive reviews.

The axe throwing industry is new but growing at a rapid pace. It is not only perfect for date night but also great for corporate groups to take a break from the computer screen to focus on something different. Dueling Axes has hosted a plethora of private events including birthday parties, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and even fundraising events. Axe throwing is a safe, fun activity that suits any age, any fitness level, and a great way to relieve stress. Dueling Axes is Officially Open Downtown

Dueling Axes is Officially Open Downtown Columbus

ORIGINALLY POSTED BY COLUMBUS NAVIGATOR on July 13, 2018 – see the original axe throwing lounge article here.

Has date night gotten stale?

Have you and your friends been looking for something fun to do, other than dinner and drinks? This Saturday, your newest night out destination has its grand opening.  Lucky for us, we were able to take a sneak peek.

Dueling Axes is straightforward, and no frills. Which is not a downside.  After a short review of safety rules and a demonstration, our expert, Mike, got us started without much delay. The premise is simple, you are throwing an ax at a wooden target. It is, of course, comparable to Columbus Ax Throwing, which we covered HERE.  But having experienced both places, the atmosphere and convenience differ greatly.

Being downtown and close to lots of different restaurant, bar, and nightlife action certainly has its advantages. At Dueling Axes, you are within a few blocks of Mikey’s Late Night Slice, The Walrus, 16 Bit Bar + Arcade, and many more.  Plus, with the added bonus of the CBus, you can park once, and enjoy much of what downtown has to offer.

Another appealing feature of this new hot spot is the BYOB aspect. You are welcome to bring in both outside food and drink.  For those of you over 21, this is a real lure. No more paying $6 for one beer, you can bring an entire 6 pack to share with a friend, and still come out ahead.  In the future, the owners are anticipating a rotating selection of food trucks parked outside, but until then, feel free to stop at Dirty Frank’s and bring your own “Classy Lady” to snack on.

While I did not see this noted on the website, closed toed shoes are a requirement to throw axes, for obvious reasons.  It is, however, listed on site as one of the safety rules.  So, even though it’s summer and your toes are looking nice, make sure to dress accordingly, so you get to keep all ten of them.

The interior of Dueling Axes is industrial and modern. Think Edison bulbs, leather, and exposed beams. There’s ample seating for each of the eight throwing lanes, at bar height tables with stools. Additionally, there’s a lounge area tucked into the corner if you feel like hanging out after your time slot to watch more of the action.

Your “host” will leave you with a set of instructions for different games to play, tic tac toe and 21, among others. For this week’s soft opening, it was just my husband and I, but I could see the attraction of coming with a large group. Each lane can accommodate groups up to 12, and booking is conveniently available online.

As I mentioned, this wasn’t my first rodeo, but I’m not terribly good. I did score one bullseye (picture for posterity, obvi), but my husband might have a future in the Lumberjack Games. He beat me soundly in each game we played, despite giving me a handicap.

Currently, you enter through the revolving doors, into a lobby space, and Dueling Axes is to your right. In order to become ADA compliant, they are in the process of adding an extra entrance, directly into the space, which should be completed in the next few weeks. This weekend only, in honor of the grand opening, you can book a lane at just $10 per person/per hour (July 14 & 15 only).

My only complaint would be that it can feel a little crowded if you have a group playing together on a lane. You want to stand close enough to watch, but you also cannot enter the lane, which leaves a few feet of prime viewing real estate.  But really, I didn’t find that people were clamoring over each other to get a glimpse at my husbands ax prowess, so as long as you like the people you are with, it’s no big.

Dueling Axes is locally owned and operated, and located at 309 S 4th St. So if you’ve ever axe’d yourself if you woodlike to try something new, there’s no time for splitting hairs, go check ’em out!

Axe Throwing Lounge Coming Soon to Downtown Columbus

ORIGINALLY POSTED BY COLUMBUS UNDERGROUND on April 27, 2018 – see the original axe throwing lounge article here.

Axe in stumpAxe throwing lounge Dueling Axes is set for a late spring opening in Downtown Columbus, at the corner of South Fourth Street and Noble Street.

Co-owners Jess Hellmich and Paul Sherry have known each other several years and worked together at a roofing company in Westerville. Hellmich ran its marketing department while Paul worked on the operations side, before working together to help start a distribution company in 2015. With a drive to open their own business, Hellmich and Sherry came across the concept of axe thowing. It’s a nice change of pace from the world of construction, Hellmich says.

“It’s really fun, not only to do, but to be part of the operation, of the planning and the running of the company,” Hellmich says. “It’s fun and it’s simple. It’s pretty straightforward.”

Anyone hesitant to try axe throwing should know it’s much less intimidating than one might think, Hellmich says. There haven’t been any reports of major injuries in the sport, and there will be trained professionals on site for safety briefings and coaching.

“The experience of just throwing the hatchet down the lane is extremely fun and satisfying,” Hellmich says. “So we encourage everyone to try. There’s something about it that just draws you in.”

“And by the way, you certainly don’t have to be a lumberjack to have fun doing the activity,” Sherry says. “No big beards are required, no flannel shirts…As long as you have the strength to get the axe to stick to the target, it’s fun for just about everybody.”

“The great thing about being [Downtown] is that we have awesome bars, awesome restaurants, really great neighbors here,” says Sherry. “This is really part of someone’s evening. We’re hoping that people will come here, have some fun, then go out to dinner, then go out to the bars. Kind of a new date night.”

What also makes the location great is being a part of the Downtown community, Hellmich says.

“We encourage and want to be a part of that community and help people be in the area and have a good time with us,” he says. “There’s such a big presence in the Short North, and we’re down on the south side, but there a really great community and nightlife [Downtown]. We want to be part of it and help spread the word.”

Dueling Axes will be located at 309 S. Fourth St. For more information, visit theduelingaxes.com.
