As you navigate the currents, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Columbus’s skyline, lush greenery, and the vibrant city ambiance. Columbus Family Friendly ActivitiesFamily Friendly Activities To Fight Off Cabin Fever

You’ve been stuck inside from snowy days and cold temperatures. When winter melted, the rain kept you and your family inside too, and now you’re going crazy! We’ve all hit cabin fever this spring, but now that it looks like the sun is here to stay, it’s time to have some family fun!

In Columbus, making great memories is easy, and we have the perfect list of family friendly activities to shake off the stuck-at-home blues! Check out our favorite outings that kids and parents alike enjoy in the spring.

A Fun-Filled Weekend

You’re gonna love getting out of the house to enjoy time with your family when you try our favorite activities. Whether you’re a high-energy or a more laidback group, you’ll find something for everyone on this list.

Visit The Zoo!

Got any animal lovers in your family? Maybe it’s time to visit the zoo! Whether you’re young or old, the zoo has something for everyone to enjoy. From the adorable and cuddly animals to the exotic and mysterious creatures, there’s never a dull moment at the zoo.

One of the best parts of zoo visits are the learning opportunities for kids and adults alike. Learn about different animals, see them in their habitats, and watch their behavior in a fun and interactive way. Plus, many zoos also offer educational programs and shows designed to make the experience even more fun for kids of all ages. Spend the next sunshiney day at The Columbus Zoo And Aquarium! Find out more about all they have to offer at their website here.

Try Indoor Climbing

If you’re looking for a high-energy and exciting activity that the whole family can enjoy, indoor climbing is where it’s at. Indoor climbing gyms are excellent at creating a variety of climbing scenarios for every age and skill level. Does climbing high sound scary? Spend your time on bouldering walls. Don’t feel like climbing, but want to support that eager middle child? Get a quick course and learn how to run the climbing ropes from the ground, called belaying.

Indoor climbing offers a safe and controlled environment for climbers of all skill levels, making it the perfect activity for families to enjoy together. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of accomplishment when you reach the top of that climbing wall. A popular Columbus indoor climbing gym is Vertical Adventures in the Worthington area. Check out their walls and more at their website here!

Visit A Children’s Museum!

If you want to combine fun and education on the next spring day, look no further than the children’s museum. Children’s museums offer a wide range of interactive exhibits that are both entertaining and educational.

From hands-on science experiments to art workshops, there’s always something new to discover. And unlike traditional museums, children’s museums encourage visitors to touch, explore, and interact with the exhibits. Whether your child is a budding scientist, artist, or adventurer, they’re sure to find something that sparks their imagination at the children’s museum. So, grab the kids and head to your nearest children’s museum for a day of fun and learning. Columbus boasts one of the best all-ages museums in the state: COSI! Find their admission prices and hours on their website here.

Go Axe Throwing!

When it comes to making memories together, there’s no family activity like axe throwing! Not only is it a great way to release any pent-up stress or frustration (in a safe and controlled environment, of course), but it’s also easy to pick up and enjoy watching.

Now, you may be a little nervous about sharp axes around your kids. What’s the Dueling Axes child policy? Well, we’ve seen kids as young as 4 handle an axe with confidence, and after some determination they’ve stuck one into the target. But if you’re wondering the ideal age, kids ten years and up tend to have no problem with hitting a bullseye, and with a parent or guardian’s permission, we say “let it fly!”

Get Family Fun At Dueling Axes!

You’ll be surprised how skilled your kids are on the throwing lane. They might even beat you! So reserve a lane, gather up your family and head to Dueling Axes for a fun-filled day of competition and laughter!

Axe Throwing Lingo To Know

By | Axe Throwing Insights, Axe Throwing News

Axe Throwing Columbus OhioAxe Throwing Lingo To Know

Hello there, fellow axemen! Ever been confused hearing conversations when you’re walking the lanes at Dueling Axes? That makes sense since you were! Any axe thrower looking to improve must be familiar with the lingo and terminology of the sport.

We’re going to get into the jargon used in axe throwing in great detail in this article. We’ll go through all the lingo you need to be familiar with to seem professional, dazzle your friends, and perhaps even terrify your rivals, from bullseye to toe-in. Grab an axe and let’s begin!

Speak The Axe Throwing Language

Here are the three biggest terms to know for a great time while you’re axe throwing.

Bullseye

Axe Bullseye Columbus OhioThis term is pretty self-explanatory; if you’ve ever seen a target for archery, darts, or axe throwing the center circle is designated with a unique color, and it’s called the bullseye. Why do we distinguish it? It’s the hardest area to hit, and in many target games is worth the most points. In axe throwing, the bullseye should be your focus every throw.

Rotation

Whether you’re a throwing veteran, or you got your first walkthrough at Dueling Axes yesterday, you’ll hear the word “rotation” thrown around all the time. What does it have to do with nailing the bullseye?

Axe rotation is the biggest factor in sticking to the target. If the axe rotates too much or too little, the blade may not hit the target properly, resulting in a lower score or a complete miss. Proper rotation comes from releasing the axe with the right amount of force and spin for one full rotation before hitting the target. Paying attention to how the axe rotates when you throw it can help you correct misses or other issues you’re having on the lanes.

Toe-In

Downtown Columbus Axe ThrowingA toe-in refers to when the “toe,” or the top tip of the blade sticks into the target first and stays. When the target wood seems extra hard, or you’re trying to be extra accurate, it’s a great technique to try.

Every now and then it may happen by accident, but many players practice the form to execute it when they need it. To achieve a toe-in throw, hold the axe with a firm grip, ensuring that your thumb is wrapped around the handle for added control. When you see the toe-in on the lanes, now you know what to call it!

Talk The Talk On The Lanes!

Take your game to the next level with the right terminology! Now that you’re more familiar with how to small talk between throws, brush up on your skills and make some new friends at Dueling Axes! Reserve a lane for your next throwing session today!

Rainy Day? Try These Four Indoor Athletic Activities

Indoor Athletic Activities In ColumbusRainy Day? Try These Four Indoor Athletic Activities

With spring comes lots of rainy days. In Columbus, the spring weather never seems to stay dry and warm. When your night or weekend outside gets spoiled with a thunderstorm, how are you going to stay active?

If you’re feeling restless but the rain won’t stop, we’ve made the perfect list of activities that turn dark days into fun! Call some friends and get moving with our four favorite indoor athletic activities.

Columbus Gets Indoor Fun

In Ohio, there’s plenty of ways to stay active when the weather goes bad. It happens so often, we’ve learned to be prepared! Whether you’re alone or with friends, these activities can make your stormy day come alive.

Bowling

When the rain comes out, it might be time to hit the lanes! Bowling keeps you active no matter your athletic level. As a form of exercise, the sport can help lower your risk of stroke and heart attack, as well as improve inner circulation. The walking and throwing of bowling keeps your muscles limber without straining them, bringing you the stress relief of physical activity with a lot less blood, sweat, and tears.

Along with the health benefits, bowling keeps everyone involved because there’s no real minimum or maximum group size. Family in town? Grab a few lanes and split up between them. Get competitive with your score or just try to stay out of the gutter; the game can be as casual as you want it. Don’t overlook how fun a game of rainy day bowling can be!

At Home Indoor Soccer

Feel like staying at home? Mini indoor soccer is a great way to get moving in a small space. In a room-sized game, the miles of running and heavy physical contact of soccer go away for an activity anyone can jump into. The movement and mental creativity of soccer is great physical exercise and can help keep your metabolism up, burning calories in the process.

All it takes is a little space, a small ball that’s easy to kick around, and a goal! If you don’t have official goals, use two objects to mark out a goal line, or run to a sporting goods store to grab mini indoor goals; most sporting goods stores make goals perfect for an in-home match. It’s easy to get moving at home; grab a ball and play a little indoor soccer!

Ice Skating

When you’re dying to get outside but a storm keeps you in, ice skating makes you feel free! Going to a local rink with friends is excellent exercise and leaves plenty of time to hang out on the ice. Almost every single muscle group in your body is used while you ice skate, from your legs and core to keep balance to your hands when you inevitably fall. Everyone falls, right? Compared to most indoor activities, ice skating is affordable, and chances are there is a rec center near you with a discounted public skate night. Maybe it’s time to strap on some skates and hit the ice!

Axe Throwing

Have you ever thought about axe throwing as exercise? The fun and physical activity of hitting that target go hand in hand. Most of your arm muscles and core get used to throw the axe, in addition to your legs helping you keep balance as you move.

The best part is, you won’t even notice the calories burning; the fun of it keeps your mind off the physical demands. You and your friends can reserve a lane and make it an event! Both locations are outside-food friendly, so dinner and a game can all happen in the same place.

A New Way To Work Out

It feels daunting to find a way to stay active and have fun when spring weather kills your outdoor plans. We hope these ideas give you new inspiration to think outside the box about getting exercise on a rainy day.

If the forecast calls for rain, reserve your axe throwing lane ahead of time and make your indoor workout a little more fun!

Axe Throwing Tips For Beginners

Axe Throwing Tips For Beginners

Got your first axe throwing night coming up on the calendar? Or maybe you’ve thrown before, but the results haven’t been too sharp? Let’s turn your beginner’s curse into some beginner’s luck! Keep scrolling for our favorite axe throwing tips that beginners and vets alike can incorporate into their next game.

The Basics

Let’s start with the classic, technical explanation for an axe throw. There’s only three steps:

  • Step 1: With your dominant hand on top, grip the base of the axe handle firmly with both hands. Don’t squeeze.
  • Step 2: Making sure the blade of the axe is pointing towards the target, raise the axe over and behind your head, gently rocking back on your dominant foot.
  • Step 3: Step forward with your non-dominant foot while bringing your arms forward in a throwing motion. Then, with your arms extended forward, release the axe towards the target keeping your wrists in line with your forearms.

Out of all the directions, these three steps are the foundation that either makes or breaks your throw quality. Your best friend, uncle, or the noisy guy next to you might have tried to show you their way of throwing, but this is the way real professionals throw an axe.

Axe Throwing Tips And Tricks For All Skill Levels

If you follow the steps mentioned above and keep missing the mark, we’ve got some advice to help improve your axe throwing quality.

Tactic Surpasses Strength

With a weighty axe in hand and a thick wood target in front of you, it’s tempting to clench the handle tight and channel your most muscular self, pouring all your strength into the throw.

But you don’t need to be that guy (or gal).

The truth is, the axe doesn’t need strength to stick; the metal head will build up speed as it whips through the air. All that’s needed is a smooth throw. Think about it like a ball on a string, or the Olympic hammer throw: less about muscle, more about momentum.

It’s All In The Flips

Maybe your throw has the right umph and flies smoothly from your hand, but still bounces off backwards or upside down.

To this we say, start thinking about flips.

When you let go the axe will start to flip end over end until it hits something. Keep in mind, you’re aiming for a single flip here. Underflips or overflips end with the top of the axe head, or the bottom of the axe handle, making contact with the target. That’s when your axe fails to make blade contact and bounces off the target dropping to the floor.

If this seems to be the problem, watch your throw carefully to see if you’re under- or overflipping: underflips usually hit the target with the handle pointing away from you (bottom of the handle hitting the target), overflips have handles pointing toward you (top of the axe head hitting the target).

The correction for both of these scenarios is simple – it’s distance. All you need to do is adjust your distance from the target and the moment you let go to adjust your flip speed. If you are underflipping, the axe needs more time to make the full rotation, so take a step back (away from the target). If you are overflipping, the axe needs less time to rotate, so take a step forward (towards the target). The closer to one exact flip, the more chance your axe will stick! A perfect axe throw is when the axe is sticking in the target at a 45 degree angle. Want to see these tips in action? Check out our How to fix your axe throw video and become a pro in no time.

Need Extra Practice?

The best way to learn is by practice! Brush up on your axe throwing skills by learning a few tricks in person during your next reservation at either of our Central Ohio axe throwing lounges. The Best New Year's Resolution To Add To Your 2023 List

The Best New Year’s Resolution To Add To Your 2023 List

How are you kicking off 2023? We’re not talking about the initial celebration with the famous ball drop. This is all about your New Year’s Resolution!

Sure, a lot of people break these (we’re only human). But what if you set a resolution you wanted to keep? With the ups and downs of the last few years, 2023 has a plethora of opportunities in store!

First things first: let’s make that resolution.

How To Make A New Year’s Resolution

Ever think about where New Year’s resolutions originated? 4,000 years ago Babylonians made promises to their gods at the beginning of the year, which was mid-March on the modern calendar. When the Roman Empire made January 1st the beginning of the year, the tradition stuck: people made sacrifices and promises to Janus, the god that looked into the future. They probably broke their promises as fast as we do our resolutions… Again – we’re only human!

Keep Your Resolution Broad

Is there any hope for keeping your resolutions? The best way to build consistency is keeping your promise broad and simple. Instead of “I’ll go to the gym every week” when you’ve been off the schedule for months, try “I’ll go to the gym more this year” or “I’ll go to the gym at least once a month.” Using New Year’s resolutions to help you means setting realistic goals. 2023 is the year to take one step towards your ideal self, not twenty.

Remember To Stay Positive & Be Kind to Yourself

We all want to improve ourselves in the new year, but with any growth comes setbacks and difficulties. Afterall, shift happens outside of our comfort zone. When the struggle starts, always stay positive and be kind to yourself. If you’ve resolved to save more money and your friends want to go out, remember what you’re saving money for rather than dwelling on missing out. Or, if your budget has been spotless, go out and keep the spending small.

You will face dilemmas and failures throughout the year, but never stop giving yourself a second chance, especially if “learning a new skill” was on the list. Everyone has to start somewhere!

Learn A New Skill: Sign Up For Winter Axe Throwing League

That new skill on your resolution could be axe throwing! Beginner or veteran, we know a winter axe throwing league will hone your skills, and ours starts in January! Our league starts with a few practice throws, and in a community of axe throwers you’ll nailing the bullseye in no time.

Sign up for one of our two leagues at our New Albany location. Our Monday Beer League has a laid back feel with a traditional one-on-one league style, while our Wednesday Rotating Game League plays a variety of skill games throughout the season. All league members get 20% off Sunday-Thursday reservations during the season, and winners get a trophy, some Dueling Axes merch and a free 6 person throwing session. When you’re meeting other axe throwers and improving your own skills, keeping a New Year’s resolution becomes a whole lot easier!

What To Expect At Your First League Night

On your first league night, there will be plenty of other competitors and a few referees willing to show you the ropes. Before your first match, you’ll get five practice throws to brush up before the scored matches start. Once the night of play officially starts, you’ll play matches of 10 throws with any other player you choose. No need to challenge last season’s champion right away.

Start Practicing Your New Year’s Resolution Now

Until then, a few practice sessions might help you get warmed up for the league. Reserve a lane for you and a few of your friends to celebrate the start of the new year! Maybe a few of them will join the league with you! If not, you’ll be making new friends and keeping your resolutions intact all season long. Happy Throwing!
