The History of Axe Throwing

The History of Axe Throwing

The history behind axe throwing is long and rich since axes have been around since, well, forever. First used as a tool to hunt or gather food and also to build shelter, it’s now evolved into a very popular and growing sport. Axe throwing, which started as part of a larger competition for lumberjacks, is now a staple team-building activity and a fun way to spend a night out with friends.

Ready to learn more about the history of axe throwing as a sport? Keep reading!

Where did axe throwing originate?

As a sport, axe throwing has been around since the 19th century. Starting in the early 1800s, logging camps were all over Canada and the United States. Of course, the lumberjacks needed some way to blow off steam and entertain themselves.

With the little resources they had, they turned to what was already in the camp- their axes and other logging supplies. This gave rise to Loggersports in the 1940s. Logger sports and lumberjack shows became very popular and are still around today as an homage to the history and legacy of the profession.

In fact, a member of the Red Bull team visited our Columbus location to demonstrate part of the beginning of the history of axes as a sport.

As we move to the present day, this gave rise to ax throwing outside of rural logging camps and backyard competitions. That would forever change the history of axe throwing.

Who invented axe throwing?

Axe-throwing bars and the sport of urban axe throwing are believed to have originated in Toronto, Canada, back in 2011. The original idea came from a trip to a cottage back in 2006. Years (and plenty of parties and noise complaints later), the Backyard Axe Throwing League (BATL) was officially born.

BATL founder and CEO Matt Wilson started the league in his backyard, complete with a point system and two full leagues each night. By 2011, they had outgrown Wilson’s backyard and moved indoors in the west end of Toronto.

How did axe throwing become popular?

All credit for the origins of axe-throwing bars and leagues goes to the BATL. The BATL brought urban axe throwing to the world, cementing their spot on the history of axe throwing as an accessible activity. What was once seen as a sport for only lumberjacks and niche groups became a phenomenon among the masses.

Toss in the fact it’s a sport anyone can play; it’s fast-paced and enjoyable, and it’s not hard to see why urban axe throwing caught on as it did! Plus, what better way to blow off steam with friends or your co-workers than by hurling a metal axe into wood?

Women Axe Throwers

Ax throwing isn’t just for the guys, either. Women are participating in the sport in larger numbers, both professionally and casually, at your local axe-throwing lounge!

In fact, almost 45 percent of the membership of the BATL is women! In league competition, there is rarely a divide between men and women. It’s inclusive, with no age, gender, or body size separation.

After all, axe throwing is more about form and accuracy than strength. That’s why women are so drawn to the sport. They don’t have to be overly strong to participate and excel as urban axe throwers.

Though, getting to the top of the professional axe throwing rankings is still in progress for the ladies. However, they are starting to make their mark on the history of axe throwing. The number one female thrower, Anna Kohl out of Wisconsin, is ranked 30th worldwide. But, women are starting to make their mark on the history of axe throwing. There is now a growing presence thanks to female-only leagues, commissions, and overall representation in the sport.

Dueling Axes Anniversary

That brings us to the present day, where there are axe-throwing leagues and bars dotted across North America and beyond. From corporate team building to birthday and bachelor or bachelorette parties, axe throwing hits the mark with the masses.

Dueling Axes is celebrating our own history this July, as we mark our fourth year in business! In honor of our fourth birthday, every Dueling Axes lounge is teaming up with One Tree Planted. On July 15-17, Dueling Axes will donate $1 for each axe throwing participant, which equals 1 tree per thrower!

Dueling Axes is one of the only axe-throwing facilities in the United States to give our guests private throwing lanes where your safety training and 1-on-1 coaching take place before your reservation time starts. That’s right; we promise to never pair you and your friends with people you don’t know, and you will always get your entire reservation time to throw and play any variety of games that you choose.

Axe throwing is the MUST DO experience everyone is talking about. Ready to book your axe-throwing reservation and make your mark on the history of axe throwing? Claim your lane at Dueling Axes now!

Everything You Need To Know About Corporate Team Building In 2022

Everything You Need To Know About Corporate Team Building In 2022

If you’ve ever participated in a group of any kind, you know the indisputable value of team chemistry. Most workplaces are navigating new territories as they transition to post-COVID 19 norms. This may look like one of three things: remain remote, hybrid work weeks, or a firm shift back to in-office life. No matter what path you decide to lead employees down – there’s no question that in-person team building is a must when solidifying a foundation of trust between individuals and across departments.

And while team building is ideal for any group, there’s a certain tact business leaders must keep top of mind when planning that upcoming excursion. But first, it’s important to know why team building is so effective no matter what industry or dynamic your organization operates within.

The Benefits Of Team Building Activities

What’s the deal with team building that earns it so much hype? For starters, taking the time to bring employees together outside of the workplace creates an opportunity to practice holistic teamwork. Team building exercises create a space where people can focus on learning how to come together as a team to reach a common goal. This is huge for productivity in the workplace. As people get to know fellow colleagues’ communication styles, barriers are broken down – making project execution much easier and sustainable.

Team building does a lot more for your culture than increasing productivity and chemistry. Incorporating routine activities reinforces the importance of having fun in the workplace. It shows your employees that objectives can still be achieved while having fun. After all, people want to work for a company that prioritizes a healthy culture and sees their employees as people and not merely means to an end. Not only will it keep your employees engaged, but motivated along the way!

Investing in team building is essential to help employees bond and discover team chemistry. Increasing their comfort levels with one another and various departments breaks down barriers and empowers employees to have fun while simultaneously coming together to reach goals. When businesses go out of their way to show their employees they see them as human beings and not dollar signs, they are able to attract and retain the best talent. It’s as simple as that!

When Does It Make Sense For You To Do Team Building?

The benefits of team building are undeniable, but when is the best time to have these events in the first place?

If you’re researching what day of the week you should book your team building event on, our Columbus axe throwing lounges deem Wednesday as the best day. Why? Hump day, baby. So close to the weekend, but not quite Friday. This gives employees a little boost to get them through the next few days!

If you’re planning ahead and looking to hold a team building event in the upcoming months, keep reading. Summer is one of the best times of year for team building! When the sun is out and the temperature is high there’s nothing like having a cold beer and good company. Treat your employees to some fun and let them enjoy the summer weather for a little while, as opposed to sitting in the office staring at a computer screen. This alone does more for morale than you’ll ever know.

With so many options to choose from, you can take the time to think outside of the box. The goal should be to get out of the office and have fun – and the results will naturally follow.

What Environments Work Best For Team Building?

If you Google, “team building in Columbus, Ohio”, you’ll get a million and one ideas or attractions. The main idea to keep in mind is that team building should give employees a fun mental health break. Day-to-day work stresses can take their toll on employees. The silver lining? Team leaders can use this as an opportunity to give employees a well-deserved break.

To put this into action, first find a time for everyone to get out of the office. Activities like axe throwing, dodgeball, or simply taking a walk are the perfect way to help everyone disconnect from their jobs for a little while and channel their energy into something else.

Dueling Axes: Add A Twist To Your Upcoming Team Building Activities

Your employees deserve more than a break room pizza party. Let them know your efforts are genuine by holding the next team building activity off site. Dare to be bold and book your upcoming event at one of our two Columbus axe throwing lounges. Dueling Axes is known for bringing groups together to bond over something new. We work with your team and show them the ropes on how to properly throw axes and expose hidden talents!

Companies need assurance that their team bonding event will happen rain or shine. Our space is big enough to host any group size – not to mention we welcome everyone to come as they are. Casual, dressed up, we’ve seen it all (even wedding gowns). We’ll work with you and recommend catering options, as well as what axe throwing games make the most sense for your workplace dynamic. In other words, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Psst… Never thrown an axe? No skills required. Our coaches provide safety training and one-on-one coaching for all throwers. Check out our How To Throw An Axe video.

Team Building Empowers Your Workplace One Employee At A Time

Encouraging your team to come together and try something new helps sustain a healthy workplace culture. Team building promotes trust and eliminates communication barriers that would otherwise hinder production. Leaders must recognize the benefits of team building and seek new ways to implement it between individuals and across various departments.

In our experience, getting employees out of the office and away from their desks is one of the most effective ways to practice teamwork. Ditch the dated pizza parties and treat your crew to some old fashioned, in-person fun! All in all, Dueling Axes is here to give your team the experience of a lifetime with a little friendly competition. Trust us, they’ll still be talking about this for weeks to come – making you the office hero.

Need some help booking your upcoming corporate team building event? Learn what to expect and explore special rates at Dueling Axes today!

SYSK: Axe Throwing Edition

Take Advantage Of Online Reservations

Making your axe throwing experience a breeze is our main objective. Each Dueling Axes location offers online reservations to make your life easier. We also encourage planning ahead and making a reservation to ensure you get the time slot and timeframe that works best for you and your crew!

Arrive Early

You know the saying: safety first. Be sure to arrive early so our staff can properly educate you on both safety and technique training before your reservation starts. This means you get to enjoy your full reservation window and play as many games as possible! Once you arrive, we’ll walk you to your lane and run through safety protocols before the fun begins. Each lane has its own tablet to keep track of everyone’s score plus a list of axe throwing games to keep things interesting.

Stay True To Your Crew

Speaking of a crew – we’ll never pair you with people you don’t know. Strangers will, quite literally, stay in their lane and you’ll stay in yours. Up to six people are assigned to a lane, but we’ll NEVER add randoms to your party. Scouts honor.

Food & Drinks

Fuel your experience with a little grub! Each of our urban axe throwing locations takes a different approach to food and alcohol:

Downtown Columbus

Keep in mind our Downtown Columbus lounge is BYOB (beer and wine only, no liquor). You’re also welcome to order food from any of the neighboring restaurants and they’ll deliver directly to your lane! Did we mention free delivery? Each lane has its own seating, so you can eat, drink, and be merry with family and friends in between throws.

New Albany

Maybe New Albany is a little closer to your neck of the woods. This axe throwing lounge is nestled in The Plaza at Hamilton Quarter in the New Albany/Gahanna area. Complete with a full service bar, you can enjoy our monthly drink specials or come up with a cocktail of your own! This location is also outside-food friendly so feel free to bring your own or order delivery right to your lane.

Quick Axe Throwing Tips For Beginners

You have your crew, your lane, plus quality drinks and grub. Now it’s time to shoot your shot at axe throwing! Don’t worry, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Step 1

With your dominant hand on top, grip the base of the axe handle firmly with both hands. Don’t squeeze!

Step 2

Point the blade of the axe towards your target. Then raise the axe over and behind your head. Lean back on your dominant foot.

Step 3

Step forward with your non-dominant foot. Bring your arms forward in a throwing motion. Then, with your arms extended forward, release the axe towards the target keeping your wrists in line with your forearms.

Need a visual? We get it. Check out our axe throwing demonstration below.

Ready, Set, Throw!

Urban axe throwing is the perfect adventure if you’re looking for something new and exciting to do with friends or family. Axe Throwing In Columbus: Things To Know And Where To Go!

By | Axe Throwing Insights, Axe Throwing News

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON SEPTEMBER 18 VIA 614mom (by Eryn Gilson)

Axe Throwing In Columbus: Things To Know And Where To Go!

My husband’s birthday was a few weeks ago and to celebrate I booked private party at Dueling Axes in Downtown, Columbus.  Before we get much further into this I want to be very honest with you – I am terrible at axe throwing. Like borderline embarrassing. I think I need lessons. LOL! It was a great time though – my husband and all of our friends were much better than me and they also loved it.

We arrived a few minutes before our reservation to make sure everyone had time to sign waivers before we got started. Once everyone arrived they took us over to our lanes and gave us safety instructions, helped us with practice throws, and then explained a few games we could play. The first game we played was simple – each team member got five throws and at the end the team with the highest score won.  The second game we played was Blackjack with Axes. For us Blackjack with Axes ended with an axe faceoff – between my husband and our friend Matt.  It was an exciting end to a really great night.

Axe Throwing is new(ish) to Columbus so I thought I’d give you some tips before you head out to Dueling Axes – because if I can do it, anyone can.  🙂

  1. You don’t have to book a party to go. You can go on a date night, friends, or by yourself if that’s your thing 🙂 The pricing depends on how many hours you reserve and for how many people.

  2. Reservations are strongly encouraged if you want to secure a lane for your group.  They do accept walk ins – but there could be long wait times. Just be prepared.

  3. Make sure to wear closed toed shoes. I actually didn’t know this but had a feeling and I’m glad that I did because it’s a rule.  So make sure you put your toes away for this outing.

  4. I know I mentioned it was hard for me – and that’s true but to be fair I’m really good when putting pen to paper but bat to ball (or axe to target) kind of skills are just not where I excel. Everyone else in the group was able to master it with a little training and to be fair – I did hit the bullseye a few times (and EVERYONE in the place knew it because I celebrated with a little screaming and a dance)

  5. Speaking of – they do train you.  Before you get started, one of their trained staff members go through some required safety information as well as practice throws for everyone.

  6. It’s BYOB – and that’s important for two reasons.  1. They don’t sell alcohol on site and 2. You can’t bring liquor. I mean – would you want someone doing shots of tequila and throwing an axe?  😉

  7. With that said – you can do what we did and order food and drinks for the Walrus when you run out.  There are a few other places nearby that deliver – Dirty Franks, Mikey’s Late Night Slice, and Pecan Penny’s.  My personal recommendation – french fries from the Walrus with the amazing sauce that comes with them.

I originally booked my husband’s birthday party here because it was different, looked fun, and it was BYOB but after our experience I can say that we will be back and my husband is currently thinking of joining the leagues when they officially open.  We’re big fans.  Maybe we’ll see you there?

By | Axe Throwing Insights, Axe Throwing News

You’re Here For A Good Time, Not An Ordinary Time!

It doesn’t have to be Mother’s Day, her birthday or any special occasion to take your mom out for a good time. After all, mother-daughter time is essential! However, you’ve probably already done the shopping at Easton, gone for walks at the Metro Parks or got your nails did before getting a bite to eat.

There’s a seemingly endless amount of ideas out there to spend time with one another, but if you’re looking
for something different and out of the ordinary, we’ve got the perfect
Columbus mother-daughter date ideas for you!

Start The Morning With “Mother” Nature

There’s nothing better than waking up, hitting the outdoors and getting your steps in. One place on your not-so-ordinary day date can be Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Butterflies in Garden

Who doesn’t love looking at nature and then being all around beautiful butterflies? The butterfly exhibition has been waiting for you to see its beauty this whole time! Outside of engaging exhibitions, there are a number of other expeditions to explore, creative writing workshops, beginner Tai Chi programs and culinary arts classes.

There’s a ton you two can do in just one place! But don’t burn yourself out – you’ve got a full day ahead.

Take It Easel: You’ve Earned Yourself A Drink

Painting Classes in ColumbusSo, you recently had a little argument with your mom and you’re trying to get past it. Take that emotion and turn it into something beautiful by trying out a paint and pour class at Studio 614! Pick up the brush and put the tizzy between you two behind. There’s no way a smile won’t appear especially after a couple glasses of wine and a few strokes of artistic genius.

Have some wine, get your feelings out and bury the hatchet – or should we say … axe.

Grab a Slice & An Axe; Step Outside The Box & Down The LaneLoretta Zedella at Dueling Axes

There’s no doubt you’ll be hungry as the day goes on and who doesn’t love pizza? It may be original, but what about eating pizza and throwing some axes? Grab a box of ‘za and bring it down to Dueling Axes with that bottle of wine you have left over from your paint party – you know, that one you were totally going to save for a later date. You can bring your favorite food (or have it delivered), break open your favorite booze (besides hard liquor) and end your   mother-daughter day with some friendly competition.
